5 tips from newcomers for work

  • First-hand experiences
  • personal meeting
  • network

Finding work in the Netherlands isn't always easy. But those who show initiative, persevere, and seek out conversations will make faster progress. These tips demonstrate this. They're based on the experiences of professionals who have taken the step to find work themselves.

Tip 1. Keep taking initiative

Get involved, sign up, show yourself. Every activity, workshop, or volunteer opportunity brings something: new people, new ideas, new opportunities.

I found that every time I went to a meet-and-greet, I was presented with new opportunities .” – Weam's story.

Tip 2. Be patient

Finding work takes time, but every step takes you further. Use rejections as feedback, not as an end point.

" You learn from every rejection. Always ask why, then you'll know what you can improve ." – Sahar's story .

3. Work on your network

By actively participating in mentoring programs, networking events, and volunteering, you increase your job prospects and meet new people who can help you.

" The most important thing is networking. I met many people in my area. They gave me tips during my job search, such as registering with a temp agency ." – Ramy's story

4. Be proud of your talents and show them

Obstacles like language, diploma recognition, or cultural differences exist, but don't let them discourage you. Be open about your skills and where you want to go. Talent stands out when you dare to show it.

Self-confidence is important; believe in yourself and keep going, even when things get tough .” – Samina's story

5. Seize opportunities when they come along

Sometimes unexpected opportunities arise, such as an internship, a work-study program, or a temporary position. Don't be afraid to seize these opportunities, even if they're outside your comfort zone.

I took my chances and am now a Customer Service Officer at FrieslandCampina .” – Sevde's story
