Getting to work quickly helps newcomers get ahead

Investing in the first few years helps newcomers build a future in the Netherlands. Getting to work quickly is important in this regard, according to new research by the WODC.

A new report by the WODC, in collaboration with Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and Erasmus University Rotterdam, is part of a ten-year study into Syrian status holders. The study examines their development in the areas of work, language, social contacts, and mental health. The report confirms how decisive the first years after receiving a residence permit are. Learning the language and starting work quickly play an important role in this.

Work is more than income

In the first few years, the emphasis is often on civic integration. Finding work proves difficult during that period. After four to seven years, labor participation increases sharply, especially among men.

At the same time, research shows that Dutch language proficiency hardly improves further after the first few years. This is precisely where an opportunity lies: work offers an environment where people can use the language daily, meet colleagues, and gain work experience.

Start early

The research shows that the circumstances in the first few years have major consequences for the longer term. Short procedures, few relocations, good housing, and prompt attention to mental health increase the chances of securing a good position in the Netherlands.

Employers can also play a role in this. Make use of the untapped potential of status holders and asylum seekers . At the same time, it offers newcomers a chance to practice the language and become part of a team. This does not always have to be a permanent job immediately. An internship, work experience placement, or work-study program can also be an important first step.
